The Client:
Gulfport was first established as an Advanced Base Depot on June 2, 1942 in Gulfport. The first Seabees were civilian construction workers who enlisted early in World War II to continue building for the Navy in the Pacific Theater and in Europe. The Naval Authority current mission at Gulfport is to prepare for and support all facets of the mobilization of construction forces, including reserve units. The Center is also responsible for preservation and storage of war reserves including construction equipment and materials. The client needed a new operations building that would serve as the nerve center for the entire site.

The Solution:
A 7,200 square foot building was designed and constructed by M Space to compliment the existing structures on the Naval Authority site. The exterior is finished with Smart Panel. This new operations building is the nerve center of the entire site. Standard size 12' x 60' modulars were used. Each perimeter office has exterior operable windows allowing for natural lighting and fresh air. The center core consists of the restrooms and a large open area accommodating movable
cubicles.

The interior consists of gypsum walls that were taped and painted on site. The acoustical ceiling and T-bar grid system support the four tube recessed lighting throughout the center. The wall mounted HVAC system incorporates zoned thermostats. The interior floor finish has a commercial grade 26 ounce carpet and VCT tile runs throughout the entire building.

Technical Innovation:
The use of standard size modulars to meet the space requirement of the Authority while providing an affordable alternative to site built construction was key in their decision to proceed with the modular approach. The ability to occupy the building in half the time when compared to site built methods was also taken into consideration.

Cost Effectiveness/Energy Efficiency:
Energy efficiency was a key concern during the design process. Based upon the amount of partitioning within the building, maintaining a consistent environment was critical to the comfort of its occupants. This concern was addressed by creating a "Zoned T-Stat System". This system consists of eight programmable T-Stats which were programmed on a rotating basis in accordance to the exposure of the building.
