The Client:
St. Michael’s Independent School is a private school in Stuart, Florida. It is serving 288 students, PK-8 and is currently building a new facility to accommodate 7th and 8th graders as well as high school grades 9 – 12. St. Michael’s is committed to promoting academic excellence within a challenging, supportive and moral environment to foster the development of mind, body, and spirit.
The Need:
At the same time as the new 8,000 square foot facility is under construction for 7th and 8th graders and high school grades 9 – 12, St. Michael’s needed modular classrooms to transition the school’s first 9th grade into the new facility. The school administration sought to create an on-campus feel while waiting for the new building. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2007. Modular classrooms with office space, restrooms, lounge, and locker space were required.
The Solution:
In February 2005, St. Michael’s consulted with the 8th graders about their space needs in a transitional 9th grade modular classroom facility. The students defined their needs and created a design. Smartboards were included in two of the classrooms, separate restroom facilities, a 9th grader lounge, and private lockers. St. Michael’s had researched modular companies on-line and contacted M Space to review their student requests. Although the project was put out to bid, M Space was the only company to offer a plan that accommodated the students’ design. M Space was contracted in April, the modular buildings were delivered in July and the classrooms were functional in August, in time for the new school year. M Space’s new double-wide classrooms were exactly what was needed and could be manufactured within the summer time-frame.
The Result:
St. Michael’s contracted M Space for the two 24’ x 36’ energy-efficient modular classrooms along with 24’ x 60’ lounge and bathroom facilities. M Space’s new double-wide classrooms could integrate the students’ U-shaped layout. The modular configuration also accommodated the 8th graders’ request for decking and outdoor tented eating areas. All fieldwork was completed by July 2005 in advance of the opening of the school.
