A Case Study of Building Reuse:
Number of Modulars: Phase 1: 4 ; Phase II: 6; Phase III: 2
Size of Modulars: 14' x 66' x 13'6"
Total Square Footage: Phase I: 3696; Phase II: 5544; Phase III: 1848
Days to complete project: 59 Days
Formerly a 13,266 square foot educational complex that was used as the
Hampden Middle School in Connecticut, this building complex was divided and
reconfigured to meet the needs of the Sharon Elementary School Project. Using
an existing building met the needs of the school since they were on a very
tight set-up schedule.
The Client:
The Sharon Elementary School in Robbinsville, New Jersey serves an ever
growing student population of children Kindergarten through Third Grade.
Set in a bucolic country setting, the school underwent a major permanent
construction project several years ago in an effort to address the expected
growth rate. The school currently handles the educational needs of 900 students.
The Need:
Faced with an even greater growth in the student population for the beginning
of the 2007 school year, Sharon Elementary realized they needed to
create a plan that would anticipate the on-going growth pattern and plan
accordingly. Stretched to meet the Fall enrollment need for additional space,
the offi cials at Sharon Elementary realized they required a classroom building
with bathroom facilities that could be quickly installed over the summer. As
an additional requirement, they needed to have a long-term plan that created
additional classrooms in a phased schedule.
The Solution:
Due to a growing enrollment and three year projected over capacity at the
existing Sharon Elementary School, the Washington Township BOE turned
to modular construction to meet their expansion needs for the Sharon Elementary
School. Unlike most districts that forecast on a year to year basis,
Washington Township decided to handle the three years in one full swoop.
This forward thinking will allow the board to add space not only in 2007, but
also in 2008 and 2009. Phase I will be 3696 square feet, Phase II will have
5544 square feet added, and Phase III will add an additional 1848 square feet
added.
The Result:
The Phase I classroom building was installed in a record 59 days. Designed for
fl exibility, the three classrooms with bathrooms and center corridor represented
in the Phase I design will be expanded to include an additional six
classrooms in 2008, and an additional 2 classrooms in 2009 for a total of 11
classrooms. This long range planned design will be achieved without having to
add additional bathroom, sanitary or electrical capacity since all of this was
designed into Phase I of the project. Each classroom is equipped with private
sink, teachers wardrobe closets, storage cabinets, and overhead projection
equipment.
Testimonial:
“We had very little time to get a three classroom building constructed to meet our unexpected growth needs of
our third graders. M Space installed the building in the summer. It is such a beautiful space, so bright and open,
that the second grade teachers come over to have lunch in it. Those who didn’t sign up to be in the space are
kicking themselves now. That’s how nice a building it is…hard to believe it is a reused building!”
