Case Study:
Florida International University, Miami, FL

The Client:
Florida International University (FIU) is Miami's first public four-year university and one of Florida's 11 state universities. It opened for classes in 1972, with an enrollment of 5,667 students. Today it has more than 36,000 students, more than 800 full-time faculty, and 110,000 alumni, making it the largest university in South Florida. The University offers more than 200 bachelor, master and doctoral programs in 19 colleges and schools. FIU emphasizes research as a major component of its mission.

The Need:
With a continually growing enrollment, FIU was faced with a pressing need to accommodate more students and add new classrooms quickly.  FIU also needed a cost- effective solution to its immediate problem. In addition, the project required the ability to utilize an already existing area of the FIU campus.

The Solution:
FIU contracted through M Space to manufacture the following classroom spaces:
3 Classrooms  each 36’ x 40’
3 Classrooms  each 36’ x 56’
1 Classroom     36’ x 68’
1 Restroom      24’ x 28’
These units were designed to provide easy access, with a centralized location of the restroom facility. Attached walkways, ramps, and stairways link the units and create an efficient and effective traffic flow.

The Result:
The classroom project was specified on July 2005.  Although scheduled for an earlier delivery time, FIU and M Space coordinated the delivery so that the modular classrooms were put in place after Hurricane Rita’s savage destruction to the area. Providing much needed space to the university, the classrooms have been in use since January 2006.  The double- and triple-wide classrooms created much needed space for the large lecture hall format the university desperately needed.  FIU expects to lease the facilities for years to come.

The Testimonial:
“Our student population is growing at a phenomenal rate and we really needed a way to provide large classrooms for them that could configure to a specific space on campus.  Three of the classrooms we received from M Space were for 60-student-occupancy, and three more for 90 student-occupancy. So you can see what we were after.  We also have an office and restroom facilities as part of this package.  M Space won the bid and has been assisting us every step of the way.”
