The Naval Authority’s current mission at Gulfport is to prepare for, and support all facets of the mobilization of construction forces. The Center is also responsible for preservation and storage of war reserves including construction equipment and materials.

Client Need:

Gulfport was in need of a new operations building that would serve as the nerve center for the entire site.

The M Space Solution:

A 7200 square foot building was designed and constructed by M Space to compliment the existing structures on the Naval Authority site. The exterior is finished with Smart Panel and standard size 12’ x 60’ modules were used. Each perimeter office has exterior operable windows allowing for natural lighting and fresh air. The center core consists of the restrooms and a large open area accommodating movable cubicles. The wall mounted HVAC system incorporates zoned thermostats and the interior floor finish has a commercial grade 26 ounce carpet and VCT tile throughout the entire building.

Technical Innovation:

The use of standard size modules to meet the space requirement of the Authority while providing an affordable alternative to site built construction was key in the Gulfport Naval Authority’s decision to proceed with the modular approach. In addition, with modular construction they were able to occupy the building in half the time site built construction would have taken.

Cost Effectiveness/Energy Efficiency:

Energy efficiency was a key concern during the design process. Based upon the amount of partitioning within the building, maintaining a consistent environment was critical to the comfort of its occupants. That concern was addressed by creating a “Zoned T-Stat System”. This system consists of eight programmable thermostats which were set on a rotating basis in accordance with the sun exposure of the building.
