Client Need:
The US Department of Homeland Security needed to construct additional
buildings to house their Federal Law Enforcement Training Center due to a
significant increase in applicants for this program. They needed buildings that could accommodate weight and aerobic training, be cost
efficient and completed within a short time frame.
The M Space Solution:
The final project consisted of eight modular buildings totaling 17,314 square
feet. M Space delivered thirty-two modular floors creating three 50’x 50’ weight
training buildings, two 50’ x 50’ circuit training buildings, two 48’ x 48’ locker
room buildings with showers and one 50’ x 50’ storage building. All the buildings
have vinyl block tile floors, recessed entries, 130 MPH wind loads and 10’ clear
ceilings. The buildings incorporate “clear span” construction which eliminates
all interior columns that would compromise equipment layout and positioning.
Technical Innovation:
Special measures were taken to ensure that the floors of the three weight training
facilities could accommodate the 150 pound load bearing requirements of the
heavy training equipment. In addition, the floors in the locker rooms required
welded seams for the vinyl rolled tile which extended 6 inches up the wall,
creating an impermeable water seal.
Cost Effectiveness/Energy Efficiency:
Modular construction was the most cost effective choice for this project
considering time, budget and labor costs. Because manufacturing occurred
simultaneously with site preparation and foundations, the client’s 90 day timeline
was maintained. The buildings were designed to be easily relocated, which
provides the potential for additional future savings.
